The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, under the theme “Restoring Land, Restoring Hope.” Bringing together governments, international organizations, experts, businesses, researchers, and civil society representatives from around the world, the conference served as a global platform to exchange solutions and strengthen collective action against land degradation, drought, and desertification.
From 17–28 August 2026, Development Solutions NGO and the GCIP Mongolia team participated in UNCCD COP17, engaging with international delegates and stakeholders at the Blue Zone to highlight Mongolia’s growing cleantech innovation ecosystem and the potential of green entrepreneurship to address environmental challenges.
Throughout the conference, the GCIP Mongolia team showcased the experiences, solutions, and achievements of Mongolian startups and small and medium-sized enterprises working in clean technology. Through discussions with global stakeholders, the programme highlighted how innovative businesses can contribute to climate action, resource efficiency, environmental protection, and the transition toward a more sustainable and resilient economy.
A key highlight of GCIP Mongolia’s participation was the involvement of selected GCIP Mongolia Accelerator participants — PolyPack and Sparse Energy Grid. The companies presented their business models and shared their journeys in developing climate-smart and environmentally responsible solutions, demonstrating the creativity and potential of Mongolian entrepreneurs in advancing green innovation.
Beyond showcasing individual enterprises, GCIP Mongolia also participated in a dedicated Business Day session at the United Nations Pavilion in the Blue Zone, where the programme presented its implementation progress, key activities, and ongoing support for cleantech innovation and entrepreneurship in Mongolia.
The session brought together representatives from government institutions, private sector organizations, civil society, and academic and research communities. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration among stakeholders, sharing experiences, and identifying opportunities to further support green business development, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.
GCIP Mongolia’s participation at UNCCD COP17 provided an opportunity to highlight the role of cleantech innovation and entrepreneurship in addressing environmental challenges, including climate change and land degradation. It also enabled Mongolian startups and green businesses to share their solutions, exchange experiences with international stakeholders, and strengthen connections within the global sustainability community.
