Alternative Solutions is a Moroccan company that turns waste from the country's historic date palm industry into eco-friendly wooden sheets used in construction and interior design. Co-founders Mohammed Harakate, Meriem Nadi, and Ayoub Habik began operations in 2017, focusing on using palm waste that would otherwise be left to rot or burnt. The company designed machinery that could process palm waste via a complicated five-step process and can recycle 40% of palm waste, with plans to recycle all of it in the future. Alternative Solutions then sells these wooden sheets to interior design companies and real estate developers, which use them to make tables, chairs, flooring, wall mountings and other furniture. The company has so far received funding dirhams from various backers, including the Moroccan Center for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship, the World Bank and Bidaya Funds, a green-tech incubator.
