ChamBio is developing microalgae-based chitosan as a sustainable, non-animal, and climate-independent alternative to conventional crustacean-derived chitosan. Current chitosan production relies on seasonal marine waste streams and chemically intensive extraction processes, resulting in limitations in supply-chain stability, scalability, traceability, and access to vegan, halal, and kosher markets. ChamBio extracts chitosan directly from microalgal biomass under mild, environmentally compatible conditions, avoiding the harsh chemical treatments required by conventional production. The process is integrated into a circular biorefinery that also valorizes lipids and proteins, maximizing biomass utilization. It is designed as a scalable industrial process based on standard extraction, separation, and purification operations, enabling straightforward transfer from laboratory to pilot and industrial scale without major process redesign. The technology has reached TRL 4 and has demonstrated purity, solubility, and structural characteristics comparable to commercial chitosan.
